I was part of this country’s war on drugs and as the years passed I watched as substance abuse continued to climb and victimize more families, including my own.
Over the last 50 years, no laws, no legislation, no new enforcement or philosophical strategies have succeeded in reducing drug use in this country. None.
I’m Dave Kopeny the founder of asapcommunity.org and the author of Articles of Action. For 30 years I have worked with adolescents and their families in various capacities; as a teacher, counselor, and the bulk of those years as an Intensive Probation Officer working with troubled adolescents, their families, and quite often with staff and teachers of schools, community resources and the courts.
In 2018, I launched my company, Anchorpoint, where I developed intervention strategies aimed at helping parents address their child's substance abuse issues all of which are outlined in our Articles of Action. A pivotal moment came when a close friend and Illinois School Superintendent asked me if it was possible to expand my program to benefit the parents of all his students, a program that not only teaches drug intervention but also emphasizes prevention, available in both Spanish and English, and accessible and affordable to all families.
This inspired me to create a platform to equip parents with the necessary tools and strategies to help parents keep their children drug-free. This is what asapcommunity.org does.

Throughout my career I knew what it meant when parents told me we knew there was a problem but didn’t know how to stop it” or sadly “we had no idea what our child was doing”. I knew what they meant because I also grew up in a household of addiction.
I’ve lost family members to drugs.
It is a problem that gets stronger the longer it is allowed to continue.
The Center for Disease and Control now tells us that the parent who is involved in their child’s life can have the greatest impact to prevent drug use. I have known this for years.
The foundation of ASAP Community workshops is built on the sixteen strategies of drug prevention and intervention outlined in Tip of the Spear, a book by Dave Kopeny scheduled for release in December 2025. Both the unabridged and abridged versions of these strategies are available under Resources at asapcommunity.org.
BOOK REVIEW of The Tip of the Spear by David Vieth Kopeny
by Bernard Glos, Ph.D., Licensed Clinical Psychologist with expertise in forensic psychology, addiction and violence/threat assessment
In my five decades of professional work, rarely have I come across a book like this one. It is unbelievably well written. First, it is fact based, both in terms of drugs and human behavior. It carefully integrates relevant stories of young people and parents to make the factual content much more relatable. Importantly, it clearly illuminates the key role parents have in preventing or dealing with their children’s substance use. The book not only identifies everything a parent needs to know, it does so in such a clear and simple way that both understanding and application are easy for the reader. There are clear strategies in how to prevent drug use but also clear interventions to address such use if it is already occurring. Although the teen age years cause teenagers to over-connect with peers and other outside influences, parents can still have a powerful impact. They can help their child not be overly influenced or pressured by their peers. So often, my work with teens was stymied by parents unwilling to get involved. A family is a system and a child or teen is part of that system. For example, merely changing a battery in a car without checking and replacing a defective starter motor will not get things moving! A look at the “big picture” is needed, which this volume does unbelievably well. The author discusses how to facilitate a school connection as it plays a key role in not only prevention and intervention but adolescent growth and other developmental activities as well. At the end, the author sees his work as a strategy for hope. So often, when young people get involved with drugs or other addictive behaviors, parents throw up their hands in frustration and try to get the issue “fixed” elsewhere. If you read this book, you as a parent will know what to do. YOU are the fix!
